YATA Mentor Program
Be a step ahead in the industry with the YATA mentor program!
The YATA Mentor Program launched on Wednesday 31 August 2011 with an Ice Breaker Function at the Canton Lounge Bar. Mentees and mentors were introduced for the first time and provided with the opportunity to network and meet others involved in the program whilst having some drinks and nibbles on YATA! The evening was very successful, and all our mentees were very excited to begin their journey with their mentor and learn and gain as much as they can over the next two months! The YATA mentor program gives tourism students and young professionals an opportunity to meet regularly with a senior professional in the industry. Focus groups have found that due to the financial situation tourism students and young tourism professionals are finding it difficult to develop their careers and find jobs. YATA members are also lacking the direct contact with the industry to provide them with advice on tourism career paths and opportunities. The YATA mentor program has been developed for these reasons to assist young tourism students and professionals.
Mentors and mentees will be matched according to expertise and interest so the experience is sure to be valuable. The minimum time commitment is to meet once a fortnight for one hour for the duration of the program (a total of four one hour meetings).
The benefits of being involved in the mentor program and meeting one on one with your mentor:
- Learn from your mentor’s experience in the industry
- Receive information, support and advice
- Network and gain industry connections
- Become market ready, helping you transition from study into the workplace or progress in your career
- Discuss your career goals and aspirations
- Ask questions and discuss current issues in the industry
These benefits will give you an advantage over other students, graduates or colleagues.
The Mentor Program has already commenced for 2011 so make sure you get in early for the 2012 program so you don't miss out!

The cost for the program is $30 for students & $50 for industry members (it’s not a lot to be one step ahead). The mentor program is available to YATA members only, so make sure your membership is up to date. To become a member, simply complete the YATA Membership Brochure.
Coming Up...
YATA One Day Conference
The YATA One Day Conference is coming up in 2012 on Wednesday 20 June! Held at the Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre, next years conference will coincide with the Australian Tourism Exchange (ATE).
Full details will become available closer to the date, however you can register your interest in being involved, either as a delegate or as a guest speaker if your from the industry. Just contact the YATA Committee via email - specialprojects@yata.com.au.
